| Hosta
‘Nutty Professor’, is a hosta registered in 2004 by Roy Klehm, which
was grown
and named by our friend, Mary Ann Metz. According
to Mary Ann, “To my best
recollection, it was probably the mid '90s when I found the sport in a
group of
TC ‘Maekawa’. At
the time, I had an
entire greenhouse full of sports (the Klehm greenhouse, in Champaign at
that
time, could conceivably hold a few thousand quart pots), but only the
ones that
I thought were outstanding went to my garden to be evaluated, and that
was usually
no less than six to seven years. The
name was easy; to me the plant has subtle elegance and a touch of
crazy. I think I’m
married to someone just like
that.” |
H. ‘Nutty Professor’ reportedly grows
better in a pot, where it can
drape down over the edge, as witnessed in 2012 during the convention
tour at
the O’Connor garden. Three
pots of
‘Nutty Professor’ were sitting in their stream displaying the plant's
elegant
characteristics.
